Yesterday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a feast of traditional English style pancakes for supper before the fasting of lent began today. We often have American style pancakes for brunch on the weekend and whilst they are delicious, they just don’t compare to our lovely natives, although we rarely eat them throughout the year apart from on Shrove Tuesday!
We spread the feast throughout the evening so that we could be as greedy as possible and have three pancakes each, indulging in both savoury and sweet toppings and fillings.
We started with crispy streaky bacon, ripe brie, caramelised onions and cranberries
Then we had the very traditional lemon juice and golden caster sugar
To round off our feast (and our tummies!) we filled our final pancakes with Nutella, bananas and dulce de leche
After rolling our way from the dining room to the lounge we discussed our fastings for Lent and we are giving up desserts and alcohol for the forty days until Easter Sunday. We are not religious, but as we celebrate Christmas and Easter we also like to observe Lent. Otherwise it feels as though we don’t really deserve our Easter eggs, hot cross buns and simnel cake if we haven’t sacrificed anything for them! Will you be fasting any food for Lent this year?
Love Morwenna

Ooooooh, SCRUMPTIOUS! I really have to try those English pancakes with lemon and sugar one of these days.
My Lent will last until September and beyond as I have to give up coffee, alcohol, and sushi while I'm pregnant and nursing! If I had to give up sweets too, I think life would feel pretty colorless.
Wishing you the best of luck with your fasting! Are you allowed to cheat at all?? 🙂

Oh Morwenna!!! These look so delicious—really, you've given me some new ideas—the lemon with sugar is definitely a new one to me. I have nutella in my cupboard and rarely use it, especially in a crepe-like pancake but it's worth a try!! Can you explain the lemon juice and sugar—how is it made? Gorgeous photos dearest!! so happy to see a posting—I was longing for one!!

well, I said this several times on the 'net yetserday. I'm too much of a piglet to give up any food, but I am giving up making pancakes. Mine always turn out rubbish, like a spongey rubbery thing! ha ha ha! I always forget that I'm really bad at making them until I do so.
I made a few yesterday morning for breakfast as I had no time the day before, Gorgeous Girl had my sad efforts with lemon juice and sugar, my fave.
Yours look absolutely gorgeous. One day I'll get someone who makes good pancakes (my mum probably) so I can try the bacon and brie. I bet that was bloomin' gorgeous!

Oh, Morwenna! What lovely, delicious pancakes!! And oh, your photography is so wonderful also! We will be having vegetarian cuisine on Fridays throughout Lent, which these days is so easy to do. I have cut back on red meat anyway : ) Wishing you and Nathan a wonderful weekend!! Love and hugs, Sherry xx
